Art with a Purpose


From what you have seen and read about my paintings and my book, you may have noticed that neither is offered for sale in the conventional sense.

Over the years, I have carefully curated a selection of my paintings for display at my solo exhibitions. For me, however, these works are more than objects of artistic expression. They have become a means of connecting creativity with compassion, art with service, and personal passion with a purpose greater than myself.

I am therefore happy to make selected paintings available to anyone who would like to have one, in return for a voluntary donation towards a charitable cause that is very close to my heart — the Matthew Adekunle Medupin Foundation (MAMF).

The Foundation was established with a simple but deeply meaningful purpose: to support widows, orphans, and people living with sickle-cell disease in Ogidi-Ijumu and neighbouring communities in Kogi State, Nigeria.

I believe art should not only be something we look at; it can also be something through which we give, remember, connect and make a difference.

If one of my paintings finds a place in your home while, at the same time, helping to bring hope and practical support to someone in need, then the painting has acquired a meaning far beyond its canvas.

The Foundation is currently in the process of being formally registered as an NGO with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Nigeria.

Our ambition is modest but purposeful: to build a sustainable platform through which compassion can be translated into practical assistance for vulnerable members of our communities.

Every painting tells a story. I hope some of mine can help another story, a story of hope, dignity and resilience, to continue.

The evening of 6th February 1987 was just another day on my way back from Silsoe. It was a Friday, and Tọpẹ had left her foster parents in Bedford as soon as Grace started her maternity leave. Meeting Grace

The first thing that attracted me to Grace was her simplicity and the gentle aura of innocence that characterised her first appearance. She had also come home for Christmas. I liked Grace from the very moment I set eyes on her. I saw her across the road opposite my family home and approached her as if we had met before. This was my usual approach for starting a conversation with any girl I saw, liked, and wanted to know better. She responded with calmness and humility. She had a small camera in her hands, and I asked if she would like to take my picture. With a tone that felt like an unspoken invitation to continue, she said it wouldn’t be necessary. I introduced myself and mentioned that I would like to meet her again if possible. Ipowu Mountain

This is my impressionist artistic representation of Ipowu Mountain in Ogidi, my ancestral birthplace. According to Chief Alphonsus Abiǫdun Ẹhindẹrọ, the Oliha of Ogidi and Baalẹ of Idawẹrọ, Ipowu Mountain is believed to be the highest point in the Kukuruku Highlands, and possibly in both Kogi and Kwara States of Nigeria, with an estimated elevation of about 2,500 feet. Historically, the mountain served as a strategic natural defence during the Nupe invasion across the River Niger, an incursion largely seen as a reprisal against the Yoruba communities of the Kabba Province in Northern Nigeria for halting their annual tribute of slaves to the Nupe Emirate of Bida. The war ended in 1886. During the conflict, the people of Ogidi sheltered their non-combatant population, including women, children, the elderly, and the wounded, on top of Ipowu Mountain.
