The Living Legacy of Retired Justice Michael Medupin


Inspired by a family photograph, this painting celebrates the enduring environmental legacy of my senior brother, Retired Justice Michael Medupin. Many decades ago, he planted coconut palm seedlings throughout several neighbourhoods of Ogidi. Today, those seedlings have matured into majestic trees that define the landscape and enrich the community.

While I have deliberately exaggerated the height and abundance of the palms for artistic effect, the painting reflects a genuine transformation of the environment. It is my tribute to a man whose foresight, love for nature, and quiet service have left a living legacy for future generations. It reminds us that the greatest monuments are not always built in stone—they can also take root in the earth and flourish through time.

This painting has significance beyond my family. It documents a local environmental history and honours an act of community-minded stewardship that deserves to be remembered. It is both a work of art and a visual record of a legacy that continues to grow.

The Birth of Temitayọ

The evening of 6th February 1987 was just another day on my way back from Silsoe. It was a Friday, and Tọpẹ had left her foster parents in Bedford as soon as Grace started her maternity leave. I was rushing home, looking forward to seeing my little daughter. I was also very hungry and exhausted and could not wait to have my dinner. As I was about to put the key in the keyhole to open the door, I noticed that a note had been stuck to our front door. It was dark, so I could not read it properly. I removed it and moved to a place where there was light. It was Grace’s handwriting. She said she had gone to the hospital and that I should go to Akinola’s house—another family friend’s house on the next block—to bring Tọpẹ back home. The 20th century was an age of certainties, when nations sought order through fixed structures, hierarchical institutions, and rigid ideologies. The 21st century, however, is an age of flux, to borrow Heraclitus’ word, where problems are fluid, global, and interdependent.
