Seaside Memory in Stone




My exploration of different media has been an integral part of my artistic journey, as I continually seek new ways to represent the world around me. This particular piece marks one of my early experiments with rock painting, inspired by a memorable holiday in the seaside town of Bognor Regis.

The rocks were part of the seaside memorabilia I brought home. Simple and natural keepsakes that carried with them the atmosphere and quiet beauty of the shore. Transforming one of these stones into a painted surface gave me a way to extend that experience beyond the moment.

During that time, I was captivated by the lively presence of birds along the coast all gracefully moving through the air and coexisting with the vibrant seaside environment. Their energy, colour, and freedom left a lasting impression on me, and it felt only natural to make them the subject of my first attempt at painting on stone.

This small rock painting therefore carries more than just an image; it embodies a cherished memory. It reflects the joy, calm, and connection I experienced during a week of quality time spent with my family in the summer of 2023. In its simplicity, it serves as a lasting tribute to that moment in time, where nature, memory, and creativity quietly came together.

The Birth of Temitayọ

The evening of 6th February 1987 was just another day on my way back from Silsoe. It was a Friday, and Tọpẹ had left her foster parents in Bedford as soon as Grace started her maternity leave. I was rushing home, looking forward to seeing my little daughter. I was also very hungry and exhausted and could not wait to have my dinner. As I was about to put the key in the keyhole to open the door, I noticed that a note had been stuck to our front door. It was dark, so I could not read it properly. I removed it and moved to a place where there was light. It was Grace’s handwriting.                                Pa Thaddeus  One day, after work and just before I was free to go on my usual fishing expedition, I went up a hill near our hut to relieve myself. I heard a strange sound that seemed to be coming closer. I stood up to investigate, even though I hadn’t finished. I was nervous and started running without cleaning myself. Suddenly, I felt something touch my leg. As I tried to see what it was, I glimpsed the tail of what looked like a snake. My older brother, Thaddeus, was standing some distance away. I ran towards him and told him I’d seen a snake. He went up the hill to check and, within a minute, called my father, asking him to come quickly. He said it was a python.
