"Whispers of the Ancient Earth” is an abstract exploration of nature’s deep and silent voice. Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Size: 18" x 14" Year: 2025 Artist: Matthew Medupin Artist Statement: This painting is a visual commentary on political hypocrisy, inspired by members of the U.S. government under Donald Trump who benefited from immigration and social systems they later sought to dismantle for others. Two arched bridges stretch across a symbolic sea — one populated by hopeful, silhouetted figures representing new immigrants, the other occupied by a solitary figure walking away, embodying power and disconnection. At the centre, the bridge is violently engulfed in flames and smoke, symbolising the deliberate destruction of access, opportunity, and memory. The boats beneath — floating in the serene blue — signify dreams now out of reach, severed by an act of betrayal. Bridge Burner challenges the viewer to reflect on the moral consequences of pulling up the ladder after climbing it, and questions the integrity of leadership that forgets its roots.

                       Ayọnrọ Mountain  In this textured impressionist painting, Ayọnrọ Mountain rises not just as a natural formation, but as a living monument of memory and mysticism. Set against a swirling sky, the mountain is depicted with human features—piercing eyes, a solemn nose, and attentive ears—transforming it into a sentient being that watches over the village of Ogidi, Nigeria. This sacred edifice, rich in folklore, is portrayed as the guardian and chronicler of the community—a silent witness to generations of lives unfolding at its feet.                       Suspended Roots  This painting is an attempt at a symbolic reflection on the enduring struggle between Nigeria’s political elites and the impoverished masses. At its centre stands a tree — representing the people — suspended precariously above the ground, its roots hanging without anchor. Though some branches carry leaves of hope, others are bare, revealing the harsh reality of life under systemic manipulation. The green land beneath the tree subtly forms the map of Nigeria , suggesting that the struggle is deeply embedded in the nation’s structure. In Smothered Radiance , I explore the fragile coexistence of chaos and order through clashing colours and gestural abstraction. The vibrant hues beneath the dense black strokes represent life, light, and expression—persisting but overwhelmed, like voices struggling to be heard through noise or truth hidden behind confusion. This work reflects a personal and universal tension: the desire for clarity in a world clouded by disorder, the resilience of beauty even when it's suppressed. Though dark elements dominate the surface, the light beneath remains defiant—a reminder that even in turbulent times, radiance survives, though sometimes unseen.

The top painting, one of my earliest works, though modest in execution, depicts a dilapidated block of three classrooms. The structure appears weathered, with a broken roof, visible cracks, and missing sections. Tall trees loom over the scene, suggesting nature’s slow reclamation of the space. Damaged blue doors and windows, along with fallen logs in the foreground, evoke a sense of abandonment and decay. The overall atmosphere speaks of memory, loss, and the passage of time. In contrast, the bottom painting presents a modernised version of the same structure, now rebuilt. The walls are neatly plastered and painted, the roof is intact, and the classroom doors and windows are fully restored. Where sea and sky collide in restless rhythm, Colours shift like memories stirred by wind- A crimson blaze, a quiet blue, a storm of grey- Each horizon whispers of change, Of moments caught between light and fading, Between the calm and the wild unknown. In these abstract echoes of land and water, We glimpse the truth: The world is always becoming.

This painting evokes a powerful, moody atmosphere with the turbulent sky, the fiery horizon, and the dynamic, almost stormy sea. It captures both the dramatic intensity of the sky and the contrast with the subdued, flowing sea.

This collection of six impressionistic skies captures the sacred serenity and awe of the night heralding Christ’s birth. Each painting evokes a different emotional tone—from quiet anticipation to radiant wonder—while maintaining a common visual motif: a modest stable under a celestial sky. The warm, glowing sunsets and starlit heavens serve as symbolic backdrops to the nativity scene, reminding us of the divine mystery enveloping the humble manger. Rich in colour and texture, these works reflect the transition from day to night, paralleling the spiritual passage from expectation to fulfillment.  

These two artworks, painted on opposite sides of a single A5 sheet, 'Awakening Horizon' and 'Whispers of the Tide' embody the essence of duality—distinct in texture, colour, and form, yet bound by a shared rhythm. Like the diversity within the human race, their differences do not divide but deepen their connection. One speaks of sunrise, the other of the tide—each a unique expression, yet both part of the same eternal dance of nature. Together, they remind us that unity is not found in sameness, but in the harmony of contrasts.

"Awakening Horizon," painted on A5 paper, was inspired by an inner awareness that each new day, month, or year brings the possibility of a fresh beginning, rebirth, and renewed hope—despite the many challenges of life in today’s world. After darkness comes light, a surge of positive energy, and a symbol of hope. The arc rising from the black foreground suggests a planet emerging from shadow into light, evoking both visual power and emotional depth.
